The House of Bvlgari was founded by Sotirio Bulgari who moved to Italy from Greece in late 19th century. Sotirio gave a company his own name, only swapping “u” to “v” to enhance the Green origin of the name. Some sources say that Sotirio learned the art of jewelery making from his family that operated goldsmith business in Greece between fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. The family is also known to have Bulgarian background, hence is the name Bulgari.
Sotirio moved to Rome from Greece in 1880 with only few cents in the pocket. His first jobs were in jewelery local stores where he showcased his goldsmith skills. He opened his first store in 1884. He chose Greek and Roman art as primary base to the style of his products. This style is easily recognizable in his products even presently.
Two of his sons Constantino (1889-1973) and Giorgio (1890-1966) were employed by their father, later taking management of the company. They both devoted their entire careers to growing Bvlgari brand. Presently Francesco Trapani, a great grandson of the founder is Manager of the company.
Buglari family is known for their devotion to communities they serve. One story tells how Costantino Bulgari and his wife, Laura saved three Jewish women from Nazis during the World War II. However, hiding Jews in their own home during the Mussolini power was unquestionably heroic – this gesture could cost the family their lives.
