The signs are there: petty fights, extended silences. You can be sleeping in the same bed for eight hours and not touch each other once. There are problems brewing in your relationship and you both know it. But is it too late to save it?
Because you are both ready to try some thing is an excellent initial step. Saving a relationship takes work, but there are actually ways to make it happen.
1. The first bit of advice I give any couple trying to rekindle their romance is to remember what drew you together to start with. Did you fall in love with his sense of humor? Did she drive you mad in a mini-skirt? What exactly attracted you to one another? Find something from your mutual past and make use of it to reunite with your partner. Even if you have to pretend to be these individuals for a few minutes, go back in time to when your love was new. The feelings continue to be there, they have just been buried under the stress of life. Let them out.
2. When we are angry, hurt or sad, we have a tendency to withdraw back into ourselves. We stop reaching out to our partners which makes the divide even worse. Touch for the sake of touching.
3. Talk it out. Need I say more?-the answer is a resounding “Yes!” The majority of the problems couples face is the result of a breakdown in communication.
4. Learn new things as a couple. If you can stop bickering long enough, agree to try a brand new past time or sport. Pick up some used golf clubs and go down to the golf course for a few rounds. Hike in the woods, bike on a trail; do something new and exciting and potentially discover a totally new side to your lover.
5. Seek counseling. If all else fails, try a couple’s counselor. If you truly want to save your relationship, the impartial wisdom of an outside party might be just the saving grace you need. You vent to your friends, and they all agree that you have married a dull pig. He vents to his friends and they all are in agreement with him that he has married a soul crushing shrew. A counselor is not going to take sides and might be able to steer you onto the correct path of self healing.
