The Continuing Fascination With Medieval Armor

The line-ups in armory rooms at big castles in Europe tend to be quite long. Visitors continue their fascination with medieval armor even in the modern age, horrified by the bloodiness of personal battle yet drawn to the subject, saved by a distance of centuries from the terrors of fighting by sword and arrow. They gaze admiringly upon helmets, full body coverings, foot protectors and weapons from centuries so long ago it is hard to imagine, easy to romanticize.

Their weight meant just walking in full armor became an aerobic work-out. Against an arrow they were life-savers; for the man fallen from a horse, his armor could make him a sitting-duck, too weighed-down to run from an approaching foe.
