The Beauty Of Manhattan Boutique Hotels

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

New York is the quintessential melting pot. It’s where countless generations have come to find something new. Consequently, the city has come to embody the very best of what the world has to offer. From retail to cuisine to art and culture, no other city has combined all the best the world has to offer into one gleaming, bustling metropolis like this.

Choosing is hard in New York. This applies to all the Manhattan boutique hotels at your disposal. While I have no particular favorites, generally, if you’re staying in the city, you need to have a room either on Manhattan or on Long Island. This will give you easy access to all the city has to offer. The best hotels, in my opinion are in Chelsea and the Upper East Side.

You can’t think of Manhattan and not think of shopping. If you’re strolling along Fifth Avenue it would be hard to ignore the temptations in the store windows of Saks, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, or Tiffany. Of course, this means you need to have plenty of cash on hand, because you will probably cave to the temptation.

Portland Boutique Experiences

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

I understand there are a handful of cities in the United States claiming to be the City of Roses, but I have to say, that moniker best suits the city on the Willamette River. Gazing out from any of the downtown Portland boutique hotels, you can see how this city has grown from an industrial, blue-collar town into a fashionable green city. The amazing thing is this transformation only took five decades to achieve.

Once an immense 640-acre claim, William Overton was keen on starting a new life on the West Coast. Though he initially lacked the funds to complete the purchase of the land grant, he successfully invited his partner, Asa Lovejoy, to share the financial burden. Lovejoy agreed, though Overton eventually sold his share of the land grant to Francis Pettygrove of Portland, Maine. As both Lovejoy and Pettygrove were keen on naming the area after their respective hometowns, the men agreed to flip a coin.

When it was officially incorporated in 1851, there were only 800 residents. By 1879 the population had swelled to 17,500. Today, it claims nearly two million residents and to accommodate this mass of humanity, the city has embraced a fervent land-use zoning initiative. This initiative calls for the extensive use of light rail and an effective Metro system to combat traffic and pollution.

The New Art Scene: Portland, Oregon

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

The rocky road to cultural relevance requires a city accumulate an impressive roster of artists and public art. I’m talking about sculptures, murals and installations that transform the urban landscape into something dreamlike. Case in point: the thirty-six individual pieces on display at the Transit Mall in downtown Portland. If you want to see why this city has taken the country by storm and lured away top artists, bring a camera and see for yourself.

Organic farmers markets, independent bookstores, cafes, sustainability, rivers, and proximity to wild scenic beauty: Portland has it all. Well, I should say it has it all now. It didn’t used to. There was a time when it was nothing more than a port town shipping out wheat to the rest of the country. But, why dwell on the dim past when we can embrace the bright future? In a matter of a decade, Portland has become something more than the sum if its parts. It has transformed itself without losing itself. It has become a lively, vibrant cultural center.

There was a time when Portland was little more than a dot on a map. It was a blue-collar town dedicated to the port and the Trail Blazers and not much else. Well, looking out from your Portland spa hotel you can’t help but see all that the city has now become. Go ahead, just look out your window. There are both rivers, the city lights, and more hipster-love than you can shake a stick at. Yeah, this is Portland, Oregon. While we still love our Trail Blazers, our roses, and our deep water port, we’ve come a long way.

What To See In Rome

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

The foundation of Rome was laid about 2,700 years ago. As the center of the Roman Empire, it has been an important part of the European history in centuries. Today it is the center of the Catholic Church. So wherever you go, you will see remains of the ancient Rome.

The impressive amphitheatre Coliseum is one of the most interesting relics of the ancient Rome. It was originally build to house 55,000 spectators, who were entertained with fights against wild animals and gladiator fights.

The Coliseum was built by Emperor Vespasian in the year 72 AD. It was just one of many coliseums around the Roman Empire; from Nimes and Arles in France to El Djem in North Africa. Even though there have been destructions, missing maintenance and thefts, the Coliseum are still an impressive sight.

What To See In London

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

The Summer Olympic Games of 2012 will be held in London. But there is no reason to wait until 2012, before you visit the city, because today you can find great sights, fantastic shopping and a exciting nightlife. And the food is not the typical English dishes.

The London Eye is the newest sight; and also one of the most interesting ones. The Ferris wheel is 135 meter (443 feet) high and can be found between Waterloo and Westminster Bridge. It was opened by Tony Blair for the new millennium. But some technical problems made it impossible to use until March 2000.

The wheel has 32 cabins with room for 25 persons. One rotation takes about half an hour; and it is a very popular attraction. So you can expect queue in the high season; but is worth waiting. From the top there is a great view of the central London including Big Ben and the House of Parliament.
