Jamaican Storytelling

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

No matter what the culture or language is, the purpose of storytelling is to pass down history and information to the next generation. Storytelling is as old as time itself, and in Jamaica recounting stories is as natural a behavior as drinking rum.

When African slaves were picked up and dropped in laborious plantations in Jamaica (as well as other locations around the world), it was their duty to pass on the elements of African culture to the next generation. Otherwise the precious legends, languages, proverbs and characters from their home would be forgotten forever. Jamaican proverbs allowed slaves to communicate with each other without their masters understanding. For example an idiom told from one slave to another can impart a specific feeling or event that if the slave master knew about, could cause trouble.

The most popular character in Jamaican folklore is Anancy, also referred to as Anansi, Nancy Spida or Brer Nansi. Anancy is a trickster African spider-god who often goes against other animal gods. Very often slaves would characterize their slave master as a certain animal and tell stories about how Anancy would trick the animal, thus imparting plans of outsmarting them. The spider-god is a great representation of the problems African slaves faced on the plantations. The trickery of Anansy was a necessary way to get past the slave masters, the greed was how slaves justified their need to steal the necessities of life, and even the creature the god represented speaks of the slave’s self image. Parents would also tell their children stories of Brother Spider to strike fear of misbehaving, or the ‘duppy’ (ghost) would get them.

Best Places To Go Shopping in New York

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

Shopping in New York is among the most exciting points that one could do in New York. This excellent city offers boutiques one after the other and an army of designer shops that would raise the heart rate and max out the credit card of a shopaholic. You could find anything and everything you may actually want there, from very expensive garments, to electronics, to Chinese herbal remedies and even vintage household furniture. All it takes is a little endurance and several very good and comfy shopping shoes..as well as a lot of cash.

One significant shopping section in New York will be Lower Manhattan as well as the Downtown District. Here you would discover Century 21, right across the World Trade Centre Site. This would be the discount store to end all discount stores! And why? Because it markets designer clothes, shoes, and the rest at such a cheap rate that it should be regarded as highway robbery! Their discount rates could go from 40% to 60% every day! It’s amazing!

Another great stop when shopping in New York is Chinatown. You will not get great finds here, and it is more likely that you will find more designer knockoffs than you could ever imagine, but the hustle and bustle of Chinatown is worth experiencing. The fish and herbal market are great too of course.

The building of the castle Prazsky Hrad from the 9th century was the beginning of the history of Prague. It is located on a hill high above the Vltava River.

Behind the castle wall are a palace, three churches and a monastery located. Around the year 1320 the city Hradcany was founded in one part of the castle’s outer courtyard.

Should You Consider Upgrading On Your Next Vehicle Rental

No comments yet - CommentLuv enabled! Urban Fashion and Urban Culture

car Should You Consider Upgrading On Your Next Vehicle Rental
When renting a vehicle, many steer away from compact car rentals, as they feel that they are not willing to sacrifice luxury, or require a little more space and features. Before paying more to upgrade your car rental take a look at some of the information that is provided below.

1. Gas Prices – Although you may look at a bigger vehicle and say that for a few dollars more, you will be able to get a car that is classy and comfortable, this is not the fact. The truth is a larger car will end up costing you a lot more, than a compact car would. When you are driving around in a larger vehicle you will be paying more money on gas, than you would in a compact. So although a few dollars more for the rental contract, it may end up being a few hundred more, when you add everything together.

2. Free Upgrade – Many companies will offer you a free upgrade at the time of your rental and while this may seem like a tempting offer you might be surprised to learn that your rental fee will actually go up especially if you have added features that may be more expensive on the upgraded vehicle. You may however wish to take a free upgrade if you will be only driving locally since it will have less impact if you are not driving that much.

kayaking in Costa Rica By Boat Or By Canoe? Cao Negro Tour In Costa RicaI had heard about the incredible beauty of Cano Negro and I was getting very curious about it. Some time later I went to La Fortuna in Arenal, Costa Rica, with my family and saw the advertisement from a tour company called Canoa Aventura.

Some time later I went to La Fortuna in Arenal, Costa Rica, with my family and saw the advertisement from a tour company called Canoa Aventura. It is a great tour operator that offers exciting water activities in Costa Rica. In the add they mentioned a tour in Cano Negro so I ran to the office.

The main difference between them is that on the boat tour, you sit on a boat and relax as you float down the river and the guide makes sure you see everything. The canoe tour gives you the opportunity to paddle your way down the river at your own rhythm with a guide that will show you everything there is to see. They both sounded great to me, that’s why I had hard time trying to decide which one to take.
