York gives a visitor the unique experience that can only come with a partnership and marriage of modern and historical elements. Much of York – North Yorkshire is historical, however there is a growing and flourishing and cutting edge modern scene. You can find modern art, music, and theatre in many areas of York.
When planning a vacation to York you will want to decide whether you want to focus on the modern or historical elements of the city. There is so much to see and do that unless the vacation is for an extended period, you will not have time to focus on both areas. The modern York deserves the same special attention that a person gives the historical York, so a minimum of two vacations are needed to fully appreciate this grand city.
There are over twelve museums in York. The railroad museum has artifacts dating back to the first railway station built in this city that would become a railway hub for England. The city lies between London and Edinburgh which makes it a perfect place to take a holiday.
The museum that you must not miss is the York Castle Museum. This is a living history museum that has become very popular for its Victorian Street. The street contains shops, markets, and homes. You can see a shoe maker at work or talk to the baker about how baking was done during Victorian times. The residents in each part of the living history museum are well versed in the era that they represent and can talk about how York was in that era at length.
The museum itself is not without a historical element as well. Having been built on the site of a castle built in 1068 and a former prison, the museum have many artifacts and items on display. The most interesting of these are displays that include the brilliant textiles made in England throughout history.
Wandering through the beautiful gardens that surround the museum you will see the St. Marys Ruins. The ruins are a wonderful side trip for exploring and finding information as you visit York.
Many of the boats on the River Ouse give cruises along the river. You can see many of the beautiful elements of the city on these boats as they meander along the river. You may wish to have a guided tour that will provide information on the many points of interest in the city. This is an especially good idea if you are not sure where you want to go first.
One of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world is located in York. The marble statues and architectural design in this cathedral is breath taking. The structure has elements that date back to the Roman times. It’s marble statutes and 800 year old stain glass windows provide an ethereal glow when you enter the cathedral. There are so many details to see when visiting that it is easy to spend hours of ones’ vacation in this quiet and enchanting corner of York.
There are so many things to do and see in York that you will want to plan your return before you leave. An adventure lies around every corner as you discover new markets and shops through the Snickelways that lie in hidden corners of the city.
